Power should return to storm-ravaged Oxford on Sunday, Oxford First Selectman George Temple said in a robocall to residents Friday.

The First Selectman said the Quaker Farms School at 30 Great Oak Road will be open Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as a charging/bathing” center.

Temple said he declared a state of emergency in town, and has asked the governor to declare Oxford a disaster area.

A fast-moving rain and wind storm tore through the region Tuesday evening.

A tornado touched down in Southbury and moved into Oxford during the storm, according to the National Weather Service.

The twister packed winds of 100 mph and cut a path 400 yards wide and 4.5 miles long. It touched down on Route 67 and Burma Road in Southbury before heading into Oxford. The tornado damaged the roof at the Great Oak School, according to the National Weather Service.

As of 1:30 p.m. Friday, 76 percent of Eversource customers in Oxford were still without power. That’s 4,212 out of 5,575 homes and businesses.
