Evidence markers show where shell casings were found in Gatison Park after a shooting in Ansonia June 28.

ANSONIA At least 16 shots were fired during what police believe was a gun battle in the city’s north end Thursday afternoon.

There were no injuries reported.

The shooting — in the area of Gatison Park and Liberty Street — was reported about 1:30 p.m., according to Lt. Patrick Lynch.

It appears at least one shooter was on Liberty Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets and one right inside Gatison Park,” Lynch said.

Police recovered 16 shell casings at the scene.

Lynch said police received an initial description of a black male with a handgun running from the scene, but nothing more specific.

One of the bullets struck a house in the neighborhood, but police do not believe the residence was targeted.

Cops called area emergency rooms but none had reported gunshot victims coming in for treatment, Lynch said.

A couple of assaults had been reported in the neighborhood in few months, he said, but there haven’t been any recent shootings.

A resident of the neighborhood who declined to give their name said they heard what sounded like a burst of eight shots in quick succession, followed by a vehicle speeding away.

Cops were canvassing the area Thursday afternoon trying to develop more information.

Hopefully somebody’s willing to talk,” Police Chief Kevin Hale said at the scene.

The area saw a spate of shootings last summer, after which police and city officials held a community meeting to address the uptick in violence.

In a prepared statement, police asked anyone with information to call 203 – 735-1885.
