Bomb Threats In Ansonia

Mead and Prendergast elementary schools were evacuated Thursday afternoon after each received a bomb threat.

The threats were called into the office staff at each school, police said.

The first threat was called into the office at Mead School about 12:15 p.m. Police removed about 600 students from Mead School and escorted them to Prendergast while they investigated the school.

Shortly after the students arrived at Prendergast, about 1:15 p.m., another bomb threat was called into the office at that school, according to Police Chief Kevin Hale.

The students were again removed from the school while police investigated.

Both threats were made by what appeared to be adult male voices, Hale said.

Nothing was found in either school to substantiate the threats.

The student were dismissed from Prendergast at about 1:30 p.m. — just before the school’s regularly scheduled early dismissal.

Parents received phone calls notifying them of the dismissals.

Hale called the evacuations and early dismissal of more than 1,400 people very orderly,” and thanked the Ansonia Fire Department and Ansonia Rescue Medical Services for their assistance.

Hale said the police department continues to investigate the threats.

School officials said the district’s crisis plan was followed during the evacuation and early dismissal.

Everyone did a phenomenal job to ensure the safety of the children,” Superintendent Carol Merlone said in a statement posted on the district’s website.
