A Derby man remains hospitalized after his partner assaulted him with a wine bottle during a drunken fight this past weekend.
Sean Rasmussen, 41, of 326 Derby Avenue, was charged Monday with first-degree assault.
Rasmussen hit the victim in the head with a wine bottle, fracturing the man’s skull, eye socket, jaw and cheek bone, according to a police report on file at Superior Court in Derby.
The broken bottle cut the victim’s arm, severing his artery in two places. He required emergency surgery to save his life, the report said.
The fight happened at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday.
After the fight Rasmussen called 911, then fled the apartment, police said.
Police found the victim lying on the kitchen floor “in a pool of blood.”
Wednesday, the victim was listed in critical but stable condition, police said.
Tracking Rasmussen
Monday, police went to Rasmussen’s mother’s home in West Haven.
While police were there, Rasmussen called.
He spoke to his mother on speaker phone, while officers listened, according to the police report.
Rasmussen told his mother he was sorry, and that he thought he killed the victim during the fight.
Officers got on the phone and asked Rasmussen to turn himself in.
Rasmussen said he would “take care it it tomorrow” and then hung up the phone, the police report says.
Meanwhile, Rasmussen showed up at a family friend’s home in West Haven — covered in blood. A woman at the house called West Haven police.
When West Haven police arrived at the home, Rasmussen was standing in the front yard of the home, washing blood off himself with a garden hose, according to the police report. Police bagged his bloody sneakers for evidence and took Rasmussen into custody.
Derby police arrived shortly after.
The family friend said Rasmussen came over “to say goodbye” because he thought he had killed the man.
Rasmussen told Derby police he had hit the man with the wine bottle in self defense, because the man had punched him during the fight.
Police said Rasmussen did not appear to have any injuries except for one small scratch on his right hand.
Judge Burton Kaplan Monday raised Rasmussen’s bond to $350,000 and issued a protective order.
Rasmussen will next appear at Superior Court in Derby on June 21, when the judge will evaluate whether to transfer his case to the Part A docket, where more serious cases are heard.
He remains in prison.
