Alan John Concilio, 78, devoted husband of Sandra DiLisio Concilio, passed away peacefully at Compete Care at Glendale after a long battle with Parkinsons surrounded by his loving family on September 30, 2023. Born December 28, 1944, he was the son of the late Al and Emily D’Agosta Concilio. He attended schools in Derby and graduated President of the Derby High School Class of 1962. He earned a B.S. degree from Fairfield University in 1966, a Master’s in Elementary Education from University of Bridgeport in 1971, and a Sixth Year Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Southern Connecticut State University in 1975.
Following four years teaching 6th grade in Ansonia, he taught for 36 years at Beecher Road School in Woodbridge, CT, where he became the district’s Science Coordinator. During his tenure there, he inspired countless students through hands-on learning experiences. His classroom was filled with crayfish, newts, and other animals for students to investigate. He earned several prestigious awards for his teaching, most notably the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, which was presented to him by first lady Hillary Clinton at the Smithsonian Institution in 1995. The award included a grant which enabled him to set up a Trout in the Classroom program for his students.
An avid fly fisherman, he was a member of the Pomperaug/Naugatuck Chapter of Trout Unlimited, a liaison for the Atlantic Salmon Program, and in his retirement set up Trout and Salmon programs in the classrooms of several schools. Alan was an Associate Editor for the CT Journal of Science Education, where he published many articles.
He and his wife moved to Beacon Falls in 1970 where he raised his family, participated in many town events, and was a devoted member of St Michael’s Church. He and his wife traveled over the years to places where he loved to fish and took memorable vacations to Hawaii, Alaska, and Italy.
In addition to his wife, Sandra of 56 years, he is survived by his loving children, Jon (wife Christy) Concilio of Litchfield, CT, and Dr. Amy Concilio (husband Adam Greenfield) of Austin, TX; his grandchildren Marisa and Zach Concilio of Litchfield; his brother, Peter (wife Anita) Concilio of Hartland, VT; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and brothers and sisters-in-law in the DiLisio family. The family would like to thank the staff at Complete Care at Glendale in Naugatuck, CT for their wonderful care.
