Albert “Sonny” Sciarretti, of 4910 NW 104th Ave, Coral Springs FL, entered into eternal rest on January 16, 2017 at Broward North Medical Center in Pompano Beach, Florida at the age of 86. He was born April 22, 1930, in Derby, Connecticut, son of the late Viola (Capodagli) Biga, stepson of William Biga, and son of Nunzio (Ned) Sciarretto. He was born and raised in Derby, Connecticut where he lived for 84 years before moving to Florida.
A 1947 graduate of Derby High School, Sonny enlisted in the Navy Reserve and served on the USS Kearsarge. He worked in the family businesses, Cappy’s Market and Derby Lanes, until his retirement. Sonny was a parishioner of St. Mary the Immaculate Conception Church as well as St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Coral Springs.
Amongst his many accomplishments, Sonny was President of the Lafayette AC Club as well as a member of the Adriatic Marchegian Club and the Derby Elks Lodge #571. He was an assistant coach for the Derby Pop Warner football team which won the 1966 State Championship. Sonny was a championship bowler as well as an active golfer and member of Hop Brook Country Club.
Sonny loved sports and was an avid NY Yankees fan as well as a fan of the UCONN Girls basketball team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a member of the Sartory Senior Center in Coral Springs where he loved to dance. Sonny loved to play Scrabble, listen to music, sing and enjoyed being with his family and friends. He was well known for his “whistling” ability.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Louise (Kobziak); three daughters, Laurie Walsh of Derby, Idie Jones and her husband Mario of Coral Springs, FL with whom he resided with for the past two years, and Linda Lucibello and Ed Jooss of Branford; one son Albert Sciarretti Jr. and Colleen Sciarretti of Beacon Falls; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and friend to all. Sonny was always willing to help and will be greatly missed by all whom were blessed to know him.
Friends may call on Monday February 6, 2017 from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth St., Derby. On Tuesday, February 7, family and friends are invited to go directly to St. Mary’s Church, 212 Elizabeth St., Derby for his Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am.
