Alejo Antonio Verdes, age 90, of Shelton, entered into eternal rest on July 4, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Manor. He was the beloved husband for 64 years of the late Mirta (Piedrafita) Verdes.
He was born on September 6, 1932, in Havana, Cuba, son of the late Antonio and Maria (Francisca) Verdes. Alejo left Cuba in 1962 and lived in Queens, New York, until moving to Shelton in 1998. He spent his career designing power plants as a nuclear engineer, working for numerous firms and retiring from Raytheon. Alejo was a child musical prodigy, an avid and passionate pianist who enjoyed playing classical pieces, talented artist who loved to draw and paint, sang as a tenor in the Queens Oratorio Society, and played the organ for the Holy Child Jesus Church in Richmond Hill. He loved to cook and was known for his pizzas. Alejo enjoyed designing model trains and remote control planes, gardening, and had a deep admiration for all animals, especially his cat Coco and dogs Venus, Titan, Bambina, Kiki, and Moggie.
Alejo is survived by his loving children, daughter Annette DeMeo and her husband Christopher, son Alejo Verdes and his wife Barbara, grandchildren, Andrew, Alyssa, and Alexis, brother Anthony Verdes, and nieces and nephews, Reuben II, Yllien, and Sean Paul. He was predeceased by his two sons, Andrew Verdes, Patrick Verdes, brother Reuben Verdes, and goddaughter Milanka.
Friends are invited to greet the family on Friday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton. On Saturday, his funeral procession will leave the parlor at 9:15 am for his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Saint Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Ave, Shelton, Burial will follow at Huntington Lawn Cemetery in Shelton.
