Alfred L. Mongillo Sr., 91, of Derby, peacefully entered into eternal rest on November 15, 2011, at Griffin Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Nora Bertozzi Mongillo.
Mr. Mongillo was born in Ansonia on April 23, 1920, son of the late Luigi and Angelina Onofrio Mongillo. He grew up in Ansonia and was a resident of Derby since 1955. A proud veteran, he honorably served during WW 2 in the U.S. Navy. He began his career at the former Fulton Market in both Ansonia and Shelton where he became manager. He and the late Nick Mascolo then purchased and operated the former Shelton Food Mart on Howe Avenue for many years. Later, he was employed at Sikorsky Aircraft for several years and worked part-time during his retirement in the Produce Dept. at Adam’s Supermarket in Derby. Mr. Mongillo was an active communicant of St. Jude Church in Derby since its inception. At the church, he served as Eucharistic Minister, Past President of the Men’s Club, Chairman of many fundraising events, and currently as a lector. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by a loving and devoted son, Alfred L. Mongillo and his wife Madeline of Seymour, two cherished grandchildren, Michael R. Mongillo (Maria) of Orange and Jennifer L. Kloppers (Dr. Amor) of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada, four great-grandchildren, Leah and Nicole Mongillo and Adam and Noah Kloppers and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, James and Frank Mongillo and sisters, Rose Pertoso and Mary Esposito.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Saturday November 19, 2011, at 9:15 am from the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Jude Church in Derby. Interment with Navy military honors will follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery in Derby. Visiting hours will be held on FRIDAY from 4 – 7 pm.
