Alphonso F. Vitello, age 86, of Derby, entered into rest on Tuesday June 8, 2010 in the Griffin Hospital Derby.
He is the devoted husband of 63 years to Eulalia “Yolie” Fanesi Vitello.
Mr. Vitello was born in Derby Sept. 21, 1923 son of the late Ernest and Victoria DeMartino Vitello and was a life long Derby resident.
He graduated Derby High School, received his Bachelors Degree from Providence College, and Master’s Degree from Columbia University.
Mr. Vitello was a Navy Veteran Serving in World War II, and was a life long communicant of St. Mary’s Church.
He was a teacher at Derby High School where he served as the head of the social studies department.
He coached football, basketball and baseball he went on to serve as the athletic director in a career spanning over four decades retiring in 1993.
He was a star four sport athlete high school and college athlete who returned to his alma mater and the city he loved to teach, mentor and coach generations of Derby High School students.
He is the beloved father of Al Vitello and his wife Jane, Paul Vitello, and his wife Beth, and John Vitello and his wife Janice. He is the loving brother of Dorothy Bacchiocchi, and Amelia Gomez.
He is the cherished grandfather of Nicole Vitello, Matthew Vitello, Kate Maldonado, and Daniel Vitello, the adoring great grandfather of Andrea Vitello, Joseph Vitello, Tomas Maldonado, and Alex Maldonado. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a brother Joseph Vitello.
Friends may greet his family on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home 253 Elizabeth Street Derby.
On Friday his funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 11:45 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 p.m. (noon) in St. Mary’s Church.
Entombment will follow in Mt. St. Peter Garden Mausoleum.
At the request of his family memorial contributions may be made to the Alphonso F. Vitello Memorial Fund through the funeral home.
