Anthony S. Sampieri Sr., Army Veteran

Anthony S. Sampieri Sr., 80, of Oakville, entered into eternal rest on October 4, 2010, at the Charlotte-Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. 

Mr. Sampieri was born in Derby on August 6, 1930, son of the late Carmelo and Marguerite Barnacusco Sampieri. 

He grew up in Ansonia and was a graduate of Pine High School in 1948. 

A cabinet maker by trade, he worked alongside his brother Mike at Central Woodworking in Ansonia for many years. He built and operated Antony’s Restaurant in Shelton for five years and during those years attained his pilot’s license. He then was a driver for Petruzzello’s Trucking and later, Tony was the owner and manager of Dunkin Donuts in Watertown for several years. 

After selling the Dunkin Donuts, he went back to woodworking and cabinet making as a foreman at Western Woodworking in Naugatuck and finally retired as a driver for the Waterbury Transit District. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he honorably served during the Korean Conflict. 

He is survived by a son, Anthony S. Sampieri Jr. of Belvedier, IL, a daughter, Patricia Sampieri and her husband Scott Powers of Bethlehem, a brother, Carmelo Sampieri of Middletown, sisters, Margaret Guliuzza and her husband Charles of Seymour and Nellie Funaro of North Haven, 3 granddaughters, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Emilio, Joseph, William, Orlando, Samuel, Michael, and Norman Sampieri, sisters, Anna Ferillo and Frances Rusinik, and his companion Alma Fontana. 

Friends and relatives are invited to attend his funeral service on Saturday October 9, 2010, at 5:30 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. 

United States Army military honors will be accorded. 

Private burial will take place in Mt. St. Peter’s Cemetery in Derby. Visiting hours will also be held on SATURDAY from 2:00 pm until the service begins. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either of the two health care facilities that cared for Tony, Sheriden Woods in Bristol or Valerie Manor in Torrington, through the funeral home.
