Arlene Ewen, formerly of Ansonia, passed away on October 14th, 2022 in Delray Beach, Fl. after a short bout with lung cancer. She leaves behind her sons, Timothy (Shawn) of Lake Worth Fl. And Gary (Karen) of Ft. Myers, Fl. Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. She was the loving “GM” of Konnor and Tristin Ewen of Lake Worth, Fl. and Kasey Pittman of South Carolina. Great Grandmother to Taylor, Maddison & Allison Pittman.
She was born November 21’st 1937 in her parent’s house on Hill St. in Ansonia, and as a child played happily with the animals at the Brun’s farm which was right next door to her family home. One of the first families to reside on the “Hilltop” she raised her family at the homestead, until moving to Seymour. She attended the Lincoln School on Cottage Ave. She was Captain of the Lavender Football team in 1952, where she met the love of her life, Richard Ewen the dashing football player, they were married for 59 years. She was a member of the Class of 1955, the year of the Great Flood. While still in the Valley, he was also a proud parishioner of the St. Petr and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church.
She was a graduate of the Hartford School of Cosmetology and was a “hairdresser” for 60 years. She had lived in Ft. Myers, Fl. for a few years working with childhood friends Charles “Chad” and Dottie Moser. Known for her pierogies, borsht and other Eastern European favorites, she embraced her Ukrainian Heritage and always looked forward to her favorite Holidays, Christmas Eve (Sviata Vecheria) (Holy Supper) and Easter (Velykden), which she always called family on Easter to rejoice (Christos Vos cress) Christ has Risen. Like her late husband she was heavily involved with her boys’ sports teams, The Coppers, Chargers, Red Wings and Biddy Basketball Teams. She was an active member of the Lavender Booster Club, and always had a hand in planning her boys’ sports banquets. She also enjoyed being part of Prendergast’s’ schools “Hot Dog Day” Arlene also loved to go to the Casinos in both CT and Fl. She was predeceased by all 9 of her brothers and sisters, her parents Wasil & Mary Hulowsky, husband Richard and son Richard Jr. who she never really got over his death. Arlene will be dearly missed for all her idiosyncrasies some were when she said “We will See” that meant “No”, and “I Just Corked off for a few minutes in the chair”, well Mom you are taking the final Cork Off. We know you outlived all of your relatives and they will be waiting for you in the light. Head strong, committed and just a downright straight forward New Englander, she balanced that with being caring, spirited and sensitive.
She was surrounded by her loving family at Vintas Hospice in Delray Beach at the time of her death. She made many friends the Jamaica Bay Community in Boynton Beach where she lived the last years of her life. No immediate plans have been made for the celebration of her life she will be interned with her husband at the United States Military Cemetery in Lake Worth Florida. She requested no flowers but donations will be appreciated to the Ansonia Gridiron Club and sent to Coach Tom Brockett 20 Pulaski Highway Ansonia CT. 06401. He final wished will be performed by Cremation Services of Palm Beach County.
