Carleton H. Treat passed away peacefully at home with his family after having finished everything he planned to do in his 91 years. Born August 22, 1919, he lived his entire life in the Quaker Farms section of Oxford.
Carleton grew up on his family farm. He worked for the Farrel Corporation for 28 years as a machine designer. He married Muriel Moffitt on May 15, 1943. In 1944, he was drafted into WWII and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was severely wounded and received the Purple Heart for his service to our country.
After a long recovery, he came back to Oxford and built the home where he raised his two daughters. He was a founding and lifetime member of the Quaker Farms Fire Department, designing and building one of their early fire trucks.
He retired early from Farrel in 1974 when his injuries from WWII prevented him from continuing, but gained in strength and health when he focused on his hobbies.
His hobbies were many, including restoring antique trucks, gardening, raising quail, making maple syrup, playing the bass guitar, building furniture, and making clocks. He is most known for restoring an antique sawmill that he operated for more than 30 years by himself in the woods behind his home. He helped his daughter and grandson build homes out of lumber he made.
It has been said that there was nothing he could not repair. If parts were no longer available, he made them in the machine shop in his basement. He was a member of Living Springs Christian Fellowship for more than 25 years and served in the music ministry and the building committee.
He leaves behind his wife Muriel (Moffitt) Treat, his daughter Barbara Casagrande and her husband James of Oxford, his daughter Suzanne Ward and her husband Tom of Millbrook, NY, his sister Alice (Treat) Gray of Oakham, MA, his grandsons Robert Casagrande and his wife Aimee, Andrew Ward and his wife Pam, Daniel Ward, his granddaughters Maribeth (Casagrande) Imbimbo and her husband Vincent, Kate (Casagrande) Zarro and her husband James, and 6 great-grandchildren Anthony, Abigail, Olivia, Bethany, Grace, and Noah. He was predeceased by his brothers Alvin and Robert Treat.
