D. Edward Mas

D. Edward Mas, age 95, of Meriden, formerly of Hamden, peacefully entered into eternal rest on March 23, 2023, at The Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain. 

He is the beloved husband of Cornelia (Vicidomino) Mas. He was born in South Norwalk, CT on December 23, 1927, the son of the late Dominic and Stella (Sendra) Mas. 

After graduating from Shelton High School in 1945, Ed served as a radar operator in the United States Navy for three years and traveled around the world. Upon returning home, he went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from New Britain Teachers College in 1952. Ed and his family enjoyed the summer of 1966 in Florida while studying at Florida State University under a National Science Foundation Grant. He went on to further his education by earning a Masters of Arts in Liberal Arts from Wesleyan University and a Sixth Year Certificate from the University of Bridgeport. Ed taught Mathematics at Durham High School, Cromwell High School and Derby High School. 

From 1964 to 1968 he served as Mathematics Supervisor for the Shelton School System. A pioneer in educational computer usage, from 1968 to 1969, he served on the Connecticut Suburban and Shoreline Educational Center. From 1969 to 1975 he was the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum in the Hamden School System. From April 1975 to June 1984, he was Superintendent for Hamden Public Schools. Upon retiring from Hamden he returned to the classroom as a Mathematics teacher at Greenwich Academy until 1990. From 1993 to 2000 he served as Staff Consultant with the Connecticut Association of School Superintendents. Ed was a member of CAPSS, AASA, and NEASS

He was a charter member of the SCSU Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. He served on the Board of Governors of Marrakech, Inc. for 13 years. 

Ed enjoyed reading, traveling, attending Intergenerational Elderhostels with his grandchildren, playing bridge and setback, and solving crossword puzzles. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and UCONN Basketball. 

Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his children Jean (Terry) Blum, Lorrie (Tim) Byrne, Ed (Shannon) Mas, and Donna Mas, grandchildren Nic (Stefanie) Dinneen, Todd (Jessica) Dinneen, Michael Byrne, Laura Byrne, Maria Mas, Madeira Mas, Ella Mas, Alexa Mas, Ethan (Jena) Blum, Dan Blum and Amanda, great-grandchildren Emmie Dinneen, Caleb, Colton and Emilee Blum, one brother, Vincent Mas, and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by one brother, Ralph Mas. 

Friends and family are invited to greet Ed’s family at Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, CT, on Saturday, April 1 from 9AM to 10:30 AM. His Funeral Service will begin in the Parlor at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow with military honors in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia.
