Edward M. Manion, Sr., age 84, of Shelton entered into rest on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Griffin Hospital in Derby. He was the beloved husband of 58 years of the late Patricia Manion.
Eddy was born in Derby on November 21, 1931, son of the late Helen Culik Manion Velecco and Police Officer Edward Manion.
He attended St. Mary’s Grammar School in Derby grades 1 thru 7, moved to Shelton in 1944, and graduated St. Joseph’s Grammar school 1945. He attended Shelton High School and graduated 1949. Eddy entered the US Navy in 1950 and served thru 1954. He was aboard the USS HYMAM DD732 when it was hit in Wonsan Harbor, North Korea on November 24, 1951. Eddy left the Navy in July of 1954 and entered New Haven State Teachers College. He majored in K‑12 teaching and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958.
Eddy went to work for Gordon Rubber of Derby, stayed for 18 years and left to open his own business, the Rubber Supplies Company Inc. of Derby, which is today still run by his sons.
Eddy served in politics during the late sixties thru the mid-eighties. He was elected an Alderman and served on many building committees. He also served the community as a member of the White Hills Fire Company #5, serving two years as LT, two years as Captain, and three years as the Chairman of the Fire Commissioners board. He left active duty in fire service in the late 80’s and continued as a veteran of that Company. Eddy was also a member of the American Legion and VFW for many years. He served as President of the White Hills Civic Club when that organization was active.
He was a proud owner of an RV and traveled the Eastern states frequently. Eddy loved life!
He was predeceased by his son Michael and sister Margaret Colwell. He is the beloved father of Patricia (David) Legassie, Jed (Donna) Manion, William (Diane Smith) Manion, and Tim (Melanie Petro) Manion. He is the brother of Ellen Trabka and the proud grandfather of David (Chrissy) Legassie, Brian (Megan) Legassie, Mark (Dawn) Severino, Jordan Manion, Jenna Manion, William (Megan) Manion, Christine Manion, Dan Manion, Heather Manion and Christopher and Jillian Thiel. He also leaves nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may greet the family at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, on Thursday from 3 to 7 PM. Everyone is invited on Friday directly to St. Joseph Church, 50 Fairmont Place, Shelton, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM with Fireman and Full Military honors.
