Edward W. Tyler, age 91, of Shelton, entered into rest on Friday December 14, 2018 in the home that he built with his loving family by his side.
Edward was born in Shelton on May 5, 1927 son of the late Edward and Helen (Rich) Tyler and was a lifelong Shelton resident.
Edward was a US Navy Veteran serving during WW II on the USS Massachusetts.
He was in the Japanese Theater and was stationed just off their coast during the bombing of Japan.
He was employed as a Tool and Dye maker at the former Driscoll Wire Company in Shelton before and after his time in the US Navy.
He then moved on to become the Maintenance Supervisor for the Connecticut state Department of Developmental Services at both the Laurel Heights Hospital and the Ella T. Grasso Regional Center until his retirement in 2002.
Edward was one of the founding members of the Valley Horseshoe League and was an excellent pitcher winning many local, state and national tournaments.
He was a member of the American Legion Sutter Terlzzi Post #16 and VFW.
He held a black belt in Judo and owned a Judo Dojo. He was also a scuba diver who assisted both local and state police with search, rescue and recovery efforts.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years Barbara (Kiessling) Tyler, his daughter Gail Florence and her husband Michael, Barbara’s children, Sharon Haynes and her husband Wade and Dawn Sharpe, ten grandchildren, Jennifer Williams, Caroline Vinhais, Jeffrey Williams, Brittany Florence, Daniel Florence, Sarah Sharpe, Samantha Sharpe, Edward Sharpe, Evan Sharpe, Tabatha Sharpe, Jason Barrett, Warren Tyler, five great grandchildren, Zachary Williams, Cheyenne Fedor, Nohwa St. Pierre, Ian Barrett, Kayden Barrett.
He was predeceased by his first wife Shirley Hynds Tyler, a son Edward J. Tyler, Barbara’s son Warren K. Tyler, two sisters Barbara Bilka and Shirley May Tyler and a son-in-law John M. Sharpe Jr.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road in Shelton.
His funeral service will be held on Wednesday in the funeral home at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
