Mrs. Genevieve Barbara Nelligan Gallagher, 95, wife of the late Cornelius J. Gallagher, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Aug. 15, 2014.
A lifelong resident of Ansonia, she was born July 4, 1919, daughter of the late Thomas J. and Mary Ann (Millea) Nelligan. Genevieve was a communicant of the Church of the Assumption, a graduate of the Assumption School and Ansonia High School. For many years Genevieve was employed by William C. Atwater and Sons Insurance Agency.
Her survivors included three daughters, Mary (Jack) Leary of Naples, Fla, Rita (Edward) Glenn and Jane (James) Della Volpe of Ansonia; six grandchildren, Shannon and Mark Knall, Neil (JoAnne) Leary, Derek Glenn, Kate (Jeff) Sabatini, Duncan (Elizabeth) Della Volpe, and Vince Della Volpe; 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her 11 brothers and sisters.
Genevieve’s love for her family was boundless and she worked tirelessly to make a safe, happy home for them. Upon her retirement, Genevieve became an accomplished painted and enjoyed art lessons with her friends. Those who knew her well will miss her generosity of spirit, her good humor, her beautiful smile, and twinkling blue eyes.
Visitation will be held Wednesday Aug. 20 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a Christian Funeral Service in the Bennett Funeral Home, 91 N. Cliff St., Ansonia, CT 06401.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Assumption School in care of the funeral home.
