George H. Murphy Jr., 96, of Seymour, peacefully entered into eternal rest on December 19, 2012, at Griffin Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Ann Manion Murphy.
Mr. Murphy was born in Derby on December 9, 1916, son of the late George H., Sr. and Kathryn Delaney Murphy. He was a resident of Seymour since 1963, previously having lived in Derby. George began his career as an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance and later was the personnel administrator for the former Armstrong Rubber in West Haven until his retirement. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, he honorably served as Captain during WW 2. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Derby, a former alderman in Derby, a member of the Derby Elks Club, and enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and dancing.
He is survived by a son, George H. Murphy III and his partner James Pencille of San Diego, CA, two daughters, Barbara J. Stumpo and her husband Paul of Oxford and Elizabeth Stahl and her husband Craig of Orange, two brothers, Franklyn Murphy of NY and Howard Murphy and his wife Madeline of Hamden, six cherished grandchildren, Jennifer and Brendan Snow, and Kristen, Michele, Elizabeth, and Robert Stumpo, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, James Murphy.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday Dec. 21, 2012 (TODAY) from 4 – 7 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Saturday, friends and relatives are invited to attend his funeral at 9:15 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Church in Derby. Interment with U.S. Army military honors will follow in Mountain Meadows Cemetery in Seymour. Contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church or Griffin Hospital Hospice through the funeral home.
