Helen K. Abate

Helen K. Abate, 93, of Ansonia, peacefully entered into eternal rest on August 15, 2011, at Griffin Hospital in Derby. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Abate Sr. 

Mrs. Abate was born in Greenfield, MA on July 23, 1918, daughter of the late John and Teofila Homsiska (Syska) Susek. A resident of Ansonia for most of her life, she was devoted to her family. She was an active communicant of the Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia and a member of its Rosary Guild. Helen was proud to have earned her GED at age 65 and tutored immigrants in English and helped them obtain their citizenship. She was a former 4 H Leader. 

She is survived by five loving sons, Joseph Abate Jr. of Oxford, Paul Abate Sr. (Tess) of Titusville, FL, Ralph Abate of Stafford, VA, Ronald Abate (Colleen) of Orlando, FL, and Mark Abate (Cynthia) of Lynchburg, VA, two loving daughters, Joyce Harris of Ansonia and Phyllis Proch (John) of Seymour, 18 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Louis Abate, a daughter in law, Sharon Abate, brothers, Henry and John Sysko, and sisters, Wanda Godzina, Jenny Warholic, Ann Puchalski, and Josephine Sisam. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral on Saturday August 20, 2011, at 8:15am from the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am at Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia. Interment will follow in Mt. St. Peter’s Cemetery in Derby. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4 – 7 pm. The family prefers contributions to Make-A-Wish Foundation through the funeral home.
