Henry James “Pappy” Decho

Henry James Pappy” Decho, age 64, of Naugatuck, entered into rest on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Yale New Haven Hospital with his loving family by his side. 

He was born in Derby on September 7, 1952, son of the late Henry and Helen (Koval) Decho. 

Beloved father of Matthew Decho of Naugatuck and Jacqueline Holm and her husband Richard of New Milford, loving grandfather of Tyler Holm, brother of SallyAnn Pelaggi and her husband Elmer of Northford, uncle of HollyAnn Obier and her husband David and great uncle of Ryan and Kyle Obier. 

Jay was a lifelong and active volunteer member of the Housatonic Council of the Boy Scouts of America. 

He was the recipient of the Eagle Rank in 1967 and the Silver Beaver Award in 2004 along with several other awards throughout his scouting years. 

Jay was a history teacher for the Shelton School System for the past 18 years. 

He loved teaching and had a gift of reaching all children, he was a mentor to many. 

Jay was enthusiastic, engaging orator and could hold classrooms attention with many history stories. Jay was an avid outdoors man who studied the Native American and Frontiersman lifestyles. 

He was an avid member of the Sharon Mountain Muzzle Loaders and enjoyed hunting, camping, and fishing with his son Matthew. 

The greatest gift that Jay and his son Matthew gained from the association with the Boy Scouts of America is the phenomenal close circle of lifelong friendships, a Brother-hood” that cares deeply and who supports each other in good times and mostly in the times of greatest needs. 

Jay will not be forgotten. 

Friends may call on Sunday from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth St., Derby. His funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Chris Tiano officiating.
