Homer Lucien Somers

Homer Lucien Somers, 90, died January 11, 2012, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Newport, VT, on October 22, 1921, the son of Dr. Henry E. Somers and Dorcas, (Desaulniers), Somers.

Homer graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1940, and Norwich University in 1947, (Class of 1944). Homer served in Italy during WWII, and remained in the Army reserve to retire as Major after 20 years.

In June 1952 he married Helga Muller of Bamberg, Germany. They had two sons Henry Kurt and Hans Somers, and a daughter Heidi Barsony, all of Palm Beach County Florida. He also had a granddaughter Erika. In September 1984, he married Alma Schmelzenbach of Tinmouth, VT, and had three stepsons, Lothar, Thomas and Christopher Schmelzenbach.

Homer was predeceased by his first wife Helga in 1978, his son Henry in 2008, and his sister Joyce Mundell of Burlington, VT.

He taught at a military school in Texas for two years, then worked for the Ansonia Sentinel as assistant to the publisher in Ansonia, CT, for nine years, following which he worked for Ottaway Newspapers, Inc., a subsidiary of Dow Jones Co. as director of National Advertising Sales for 22 years.

A faithful Rotarian, he served in several clubs for 60 years. Homer was an active supporter of the Boy Scouts, YMCA and community chests.

With his wife Alma, he traveled the world, adding great experiences to his already interesting life.

There will be a memorial service and Mass at Christ the King Church in Rutland, with the date to be announced.

Homer will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
