Hortense Gilda Arcuri, age 89, of Oxford, the beloved wife of 58 years to the late Albert L. Arcuri, entered into eternal rest peacefully with her loving family by her side on Friday, May 15, 2015 at Griffin Hospital, Derby.
She was born in Bristol, RI on October 23, 1925, the beloved daughter of the late Joseph Matos and Lucy Silva Matos. At age 5, she returned to St. Michael, Azores, Portugal where her family originated and remained there until she returned to Naugatuck at the age of 8. Hortense, lovingly known by her friends and family as “Horty”, worked for the Oxford Post Office for 8 years and as an Aide at The Southbury Training School.
She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department where she planned many Christmas parties for the children of the department. Horty was also a member of the Oxford Grange Hall on Rt. 67 and the Swan Lake Association. She greatly enjoyed sewing, cooking and singing with her local choral group. Horty loved all animals, especially her cats. She cherished the time she spent with her three great-grandchildren Eleanor, Sofia and Layla. Horty will be missed by her family and many friends and will forever be in our hearts.
Her loving family includes her caring son Albert A. Arcuri and his wife Lorrie of Oxford, her devoted daughter Cynthia Urless and her husband Theodore of Ansonia, her loving sister Mary Donofrio of Naugatuck, her two cherished granddaughters Shannon Chaves and her husband Victor of Oxford and Lisa Urless and her husband Tom Fung of Hamden, her three cherished great-grandchildren Eleanor, Sofia and Layla and several loving nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service in Celebration of Horty’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of the Miller-Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank Street (RT 67, across from Klarides Village), Seymour. Interment in the family plot at St. Augustine Cemetery, Seymour will follow. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 9:00 am until the start of the service at 11:00 am.
