Jean M. (Turecek) Mai, age 72, peacefully entered into eternal rest on September 23, 2022, in the comfort of her home, with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of forty-eight years to Lawrence P. Mai.
Jean was born in Bridgeport on February 26, 1950, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Slovak Turecek. She grew up in Shelton and was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Trumbull and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. Jean began her teaching career at an Oxford daycare, later was a first-grade teacher at St. Mary/St. Michael School in Derby. She was the owner of Science Snoopers of Derby and taught at many area libraries and schools. Jean was a devout communicant of Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia where she founded the Angel Food Ministry, a group of dedicated volunteers from the church that cooked and delivered meals to the less fortunate at the Spooner House in Shelton. She enjoyed reading, helping others, cooking, baking and in her earlier years, horseback riding.
In addition to her husband Larry, she leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Tim L. Mai (Kathryn) of Mint Hill, NC, daughters, Katie E. Loretz (Kristopher) of Monroe, NC and Becky M. McArthur (Brian) of Ansonia, brothers, Donald Turecek (Joanne) of North Branford and James Turecek (Lisa) of Ansonia, grandchildren, Mac and Mitchell Mai of Mint Hill, NC, Aidan and Juliana Loretz of Monroe, NC and Claire and Grant McArthur of Ansonia, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Turecek and a sister, Marylu Doherty.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family and pay their respects on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Wednesday, all are invited and welcome to attend her funeral by meeting directly at 10:00 am at Holy Rosary Church, 10 Father Salemi Drive in Ansonia for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Mount Saint Peter Cemetery in Derby. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to the Spooner House, 30 Todd Road, Shelton, CT 06484.
