John A. “Poppy” Barry Sr.

John A. Poppy” Barry Sr., 71, of Ansonia, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Wednesday evening August 12, 2009 in the comfort of his home.

John was born in Shelton on Nov. 5, 1937 son of the late Robert and Alberta Wilson Barry. John had worked as a machinist at the Farrel Corp. in Ansonia becoming president of the Steel Workers Union Local 134. He later was employed for the AFL-CIO and also as a State of Connecticut Workmen’s Compensation Coordinator. He honorably served in the U.S. Marine Corp. during the Lebanon Conflict. John was a member of the D.A.V. and the Slovak Club in Ansonia. A passionate fisherman, he enjoyed spending time on the Long Island Sound chasing bluefish.”

He is survived by his longtime companion Ann Marie Caporale of Ansonia, 2 sons, John A. Barry Jr. (April) of CA, and Mark A. Barry of New Haven, 4 daughters, Shelly Pepe of Derby, Dawn Rich (David) of Oxford, Danielle LoCascio (Paul) of Naugatuck, and Holly Barry (Steven Doughty) of Seymour, 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend his funeral service on Monday Aug. 17, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia with Pastor Jim Wegner officiating, followed by U.S. Marine military honors. Burial will be held privately.
