John A. Della Volpe, age 83, of Ansonia, died peacefully on Sunday, September 10, in his home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Sandra Amico Della Volpe of Ansonia, and the son of the late Albert J Della Volpe Sr and Filomena Terracciano Della Volpe of Ansonia.
After graduating from Ansonia High School in 1957, John enlisted in the military, serving in the US Navy as a member of the Helicopter Utility, Squadron Two “Fleet Angels” on the USS Intrepid. Upon discharge, he attended the University of New Haven, where his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice earned him a spot in the Connecticut State Police Academy.
Upon graduating from the Academy in 1966, John’s first assignment was in undercover narcotics investigations. During his 23 years on the force, John worked at Troop I (Bethany), Troop A (Southbury), and Troop L (Litchfield), and for most of that career, he worked as an investigator in several units, such as the Western District Major Crime Unit, the Special Revenue Unit, and the Organized Crime Unit.
John was respected as a tough, seasoned, hard-nosed investigator who received several commendations for his hard work. John retired from the State Police force in 1989 as Patrol Sergeant at Troop I Bethany.
Always busy, he enjoyed working with his hands and restoring antiques, as well as hunting and fishing. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 174 and the Catholic War Veterans, St. Michael’s Post, where he often enjoyed a good (or not so good) game of pinochle.
He is survived by daughter Cynthia Della Volpe of Ansonia, and daughter Kristen Della Volpe of Seymour, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by five brothers: Vincent Della Volpe, James “Jack” Della Volpe, Albert “Abie” Della Volpe, Anthony Della Volpe, and Dominic “DeeDee” Della Volpe, and is predeceased by three sisters, Mary Menna, Edith “Dee” DiStasi, and Elvira “Vee” Della Volpe. Per his wishes, a gathering and private burial will be conducted at a later time. To honor the memory of “Johnny Dell,” donations can be made to the Smilow Cancer Center, 350 Seymour Avenue, Suite 6, Derby CT 06418.
