John D. Hummel, husband of Lorraine Wilson Hummel and resident of Oxford, peacefully entered into eternal rest at home on June 20.
He was born Nov. 8, 1930 in Derby, son of the late Charles and Henrietta Jensen Hummel.
He spent his primary years in Ansonia attending Lincoln School and 3 years of High School. He finished his senior year at Seymour High School after the family moved to Oxford, graduating in 1948. After graduation he worked for the James Swan Co. in Seymour. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps., serving with the 93rd Battalion in Korea, delivering supplies, land mines, ammunition etc., to the men on the front line of defense. Sgt. Hummel received several medals, including the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Ribbon & U.N. service medal during the conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1954. After discharge he attended UCONN to pursue a degree in horticulture, later opening the John D. Hummel Nursery in Oxford which he and his wife (with the help of several nephews) operated for several years. He also worked for Kerite Co. in Seymour.
John was a life member of The Seymour Fish & Game Club in Oxford. He was a 60 year member of the David S. Miles American Legion Post 174 of Oxford. He was a lifelong active member of the Ansonia Congregational Church, having been baptized, confirmed and married there and held many positions in the church, lastly serving as deacon. John & his wife loved to travel, the bags were always packed and the gas tanks filled. In later years he didn’t fly and the trips became more enjoyable interesting; traveling to friends in Biloxi, MS or to a casino in CT.
In addition to his wife Lorraine, he leaves to cherish his memory his brother Charles Hummel & wife Joyce of Oxford, sisters Marie Greene of Southbury, Elizabeth “Betty” Lovitt of N.C., Jane Rose of Derby and many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Frank, Henry & Karl Hummel, sister Henrietta “Dotty” Nichols, brothers in law Robert Greene, Ronald Rose & Ray Lovitt & sister in law Hazel Hummel.
Friends may call on Wednesday June 22nd from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home, 12 Franklin St. Ansonia. Funeral services will be held Thursday (DIRECTLY) at 10:00 a.m. from The First Congregational Church in Ansonia. Burial will follow in Great Hill Cemetery in Seymour.
