John F. “Jack” Brady Jr., 85, of Ansonia, entered into eternal rest on Monday, Sept. 22 at home. He is the beloved husband of Arline German Brady for 62 years.
Mr. Brady was born in Derby on May 4, 1929, the son of the late John F. Brady, Sr. and Helen O’Keefe Brady. His sister, Helen I. Brady, of Derby and New York City, predeceased him. He was a graduate of Derby High School’s Class of 1947 and the LPN Program at Eli Whitney Regional Vocational High School, Class of 1984.
Jack was ordained a Deacon by Archbishop Francis Whealon on June 19, 1981 and served at The Church of the Assumption for 30 years. He was a Navy veteran who served with the Atlantic fleet during the Korean conflict and a member of the V.F.W.
He was the proprietor of Brady’s Market in Ansonia for 30 years until changing careers to work as a psychiatric nurse at the West Haven V.A. Medical Center.
Jack was a past Captain and 50-year member of the Webster Hose Company. He was also Past Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus, Council 23, as well as a 66-year member. Each year he marched in the Good Friday way of the Cross, and is a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities and a Past President of the Lions Club of Ansonia. He served as a member of the Katherine Matthies Foundation Advisory Board, the Derby Historical Society Advisory Board, The Board of Directors of Area Congregations Together (ACT) and ACT’S Spooner House Shelter for the homeless.
As a member of the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Group he was involved in the domestic violence program “Umbrella” and instrumental in their Holiday Under the Trees and Back-To-School programs. He was honored with their Good Neighbor Award in 2010. In 2002 he received the Gold Seal Award from the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce. As a member of the NAACP, he was recognized for outstanding religious service in the Valley.
Survivors besides his wife Arline are daughters Maureen (Chris) Moran of Chicago and Ellen Witek of Brewster, Massachusetts, and sons John (Anne) of Richardson, Texas, Jim (Donna Tine) of Methuen, Massachusetts, Tom (Kim) of Woodbury and George (Claudia) of Hillsborough, North Carolina. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Liz and Grace Moran, Anja, Elise and Allie Witek, and John, Carol, Margaret, Emily, Ian, Tim, Ryan, and Sean Brady.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. in The Church of the Assumption, 23 N. Cliff St., Ansonia. On Saturday his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in the church. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery, Derby.
