John R. Mehaylo, age 88, of Shelton entered into rest on Wednesday Nov. 6, 2013 at CT Hospice.
He was the devoted husband of the late Leta (Henry) Mehaylo.
He was born in Shelton on August 26, 1925 son of the late John and Marie (Goodman) Mehaylo and was a resident of Shelton for most of his life.
John’s love of sports was his inspiration to pursue a career in Physical Education. He taught for over 35 years in the Shelton System at all grade levels, becoming the head of the Shelton High School Physical Education Department for many years before his retirement.
John served his country as a Marine during World War II. He was a member of the Iwo Jima Survivors Group.
He is the beloved father of Cheryl Ann Mehaylo, Laura Griffin and her husband William H. Griffin, Margo O’Connell and her husband Kerry and John Frances Mehaylo. He is also survived by eight loving grandchildren, a brother Robert Mehaylo and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Marie Shortell.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home 253 Elizabeth St. Derby. His funeral will leave the funeral home on Monday at 9 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in St. Mary Church, Derby. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mt.
