Joseph W. Wirtemburg Sr., age 83, peacefully entered into eternal rest on January 21, 2019, in the comfort of his home. He was the beloved husband of Doris Deitz Wirtemburg.
Mr. Wirtemburg was born in Bridgeport on October 22, 1935, son of the late Joseph E. and Marjorie Ferguson Wirtemburg. He resided in Fairfield before moving to Ansonia twenty-five years ago.
He was employed as a welder at the former Wiretex in Fairfield until his retirement.
A proud veteran, he honorably served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Saratoga. Joe enjoyed building model tanks, all things Disney, trains and photography. He also loved decorating for the Christmas season and was happiest when surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Doris, he leaves to cherish his memory, sons, Joseph W. Wirtemburg Jr. (Diane) of Stratford and John W. Wirtemburg (Jill) of Naugatuck, daughters, Elizabeth A. Wirtemburg Hebert (Leo) of Bristol and Mary Ellen Wirtemburg of Derby, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Howard E. Wirtemburg and a brother, Edward Wirtemburg.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday January 25, 2019, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia.
On Saturday, his funeral service will begin at 10:00 am in the funeral home with Rev. Nicholas Pavia officiating. Interment with U.S. Navy military honors will immediately follow in Lawncroft Cemetery in Fairfield.
