Mary Markut

Mary Markut, age 99, of Shelton, entered into her eternal rest on Saturday, September 22, 2012 in her home with her loving family by her side. She was the devoted wife of the late Frank Markut.

Mrs. Markut was born in Greenwich on January 18, 1913, daughter of the late Martin and Blanche (Golmbieski) Beres. She was raised on her family farm in Seymour until moving to Shelton to raise her family. She was an avid reader and an excellent seamstress, whose repertoire included knitting, quilting, crocheting, and tatting — she even sewed each sequin on her hand-made dance recital costumes, as well as the uniforms for the Shelton High School Cheerleaders — and her scissors also were put to use to cut the hair of all family members. She loved to travel — her bag was always packed — when she was 88, she visited Poland, and when she turned 90 she went to Alaska. In her spare time, she worked as a supervisor at Oronoque Bakery for 25 years, retiring in 1988.

She is the beloved mother of Francis Markut, his wife Elizabeth, William Markut, his wife Corrine, and Blanche Grosser, her husband Frank; and the loving sister of Bernard Beres.

She leaves 8 cherished grandchildren, 7 adoring great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and her devoted caregiver & adopted daughter Krystyna Bialon. She was pre-deceased by her son, Richard Markut, her sister’s, Helen Husti & Genevieve Vitalia, and grandson’s, Alan Farkas and Andrew Redmond.

Friends may greet her family on Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road Shelton. On Thursday, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM in Holy Savior Church, 139 Prospect Street, Union City, CT 06770. Burial will follow in Holy Savior Cemetery. At the request of her family, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Savior Church. Leave condolences to her family at www.riverviewfh.com
