Miriam Strong, a longtime resident of Oxford, passed away July 2.
She was born in Derby to the late Rowland and Edith Hull Strong.
Miriam attended Ansonia schools and graduated from Northfield Seminary, (now Northfield Mt. Herman) and received a B.A. from University of Connecticut.
Miriam worked as a chemist for Anaconda American Brass in Ansonia as well as their research center in Waterbury, for a total of 35 years.
She was a member of the Ansonia Congregational Church, where she also served as church historian, cabinet secretary and Sunday school teacher.
From 1968 to the present Miriam was a member of the Oxford Republican Town Committee and the committee’s secretary for 40 years.
A resident of Oxford since 1953, Miriam was active in and held office on many committees and commissions including Seymour-Oxford regionalization, Oxford Republican Women’s Club, Jones property study committee, Seymour-Oxford Aquifer Protection Committee, Oxford Sewer Avoidance Committee, Valley Water Authority and Oxford C.D.A.P. Perhaps her greatest contribution occurred on the Oxford Inland Wetlands Commission on which she served for 30 years, mostly as secretary. Her diligent work as the secretary kept the commission functioning as a volunteer agency into the late 1990’s.
Miriam will be dearly missed by the Schreiber & Ferrillo families. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 7th at 11:30 a.m. from the Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home, 12 Franklin St. Ansonia. (http://www.jenkinskingfh.com)
Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia. Friends may call on Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
