Nancy M. “Notch” Magda

Our dear mother Nancy M. Notch” Magda of Derby sadly passed away on Saturday April 1, 2023 at the age of 96.

She was born in Shelton CT. on Dec. 31, 1926, daughter of the late Victor and Emilia (Rupinski) Symbol. Nancy was the youngest of eight children. Throughout her life, she loved to roller skate, ice skate, bowl, swim and dance. As a young woman, she was employed at the old Sponge Rubber Company in Shelton where she was an executive secretary demonstrating proficient skills in shorthand and typing. She also became an accomplished duckpin bowler where she set many league records playing for the Spongettes in the Valley Girls Club Bowling League. She loved listening to big band music and enjoyed ballroom dancing. Nancy had many girlfriends that hung out with the men from the Saint Stans club where they danced to polkas and waltzes at the old Polski Dom in Shelton. This is where she met the love of her life, the late Henry Miggs” Magda. 

The two fell in love, married and had three lovely spring little chickens” as she sometimes referred to her kids. Silver Sands at Milford beach was one of her favorite places to spend the day swimming and playing with the family. Holidays were her favorite time making perogies, babka bread, paczkis, carrot cake and other treats. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and had an amazingly sharp mind up to her final hours. She traveled till the age of 92 visiting her grandkids during the summers and winter holidays in Utah. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Michael’s church and never missed her daily mass. Nancy was immensely proud of her entire family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories.

Nancy was the beloved mother of Madelyn I. Lupkas and her husband Richard, David Victor Magda and his wife Mary Ann and Daniel J. Magda and his wife Denise H., loving grandmother of Alan Brown, David J. Magda, Scott Lupkas, Nicholas Magda, and Cassidy Magda and great grandmother of Rebecca and Fern Lupkas, Chelsie Labreque, Christiana Magda, Taylor Brown, Brooklyn Magda and Noah Magda and great great grandmother of Ellie Grajalez. She was also survived by several nieces and nephews. Nancy was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas Baldewicz, Leon Baldewicz and Maxim Symbol, four sisters, Zanobia Rossetti, Elizabeth Nappi, Mathilda Ahearn and Julia Kinnas and a granddaughter Jennifer Brown.

On Friday, friends may greet the family at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth St., Derby from 9:00 — 11:00 AM. Her funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 11:00 AM for her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM. Her burial will follow at Mt. St. Peter Cemetery.
