Philomena H. “Phyllis” Hunt, 97, peacefully entered into eternal rest on May 21, 2016, at the Lutheran Home in Southbury, with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late John J. Hunt Sr.
Mrs. Hunt was born in Derby on July 8, 1918, daughter of the late Dominic and Liberata Sonsini Uberti. A lifelong resident of the Ansonia community, she had worked as the director of food services for the City of Ansonia Board of Education for many years until her retirement in 1990. An active communicant of Holy Rosary Church, she served as past president of St. Ann’s Society, taught religious education and helped run the annual Italian festival. She volunteered for many local civic organizations and for ten years cooked for and served the homeless at numerous shelters throughout the Valley. In 1985, she was recognized by the American Legion as the community’s woman of the year. Phyllis was a devoted Ansonia High School football supporter starting in 1961 when her sons played and continued throughout the years during her son Jack’s highlighted coaching career. She was the founder of the AHS pep club in 1963 and on January 10, Phyllis Hunt Day was proclaimed by the City of Ansonia. Phyllis was widowed at the young age of 49 and devoted herself to her children and grandchildren, providing a strong foundation from which they would grow and prosper.
She is survived by a loving daughter, Joanne E. Hunt of Ansonia, a loving son, Robert P. Hunt of Seymour, daughter in law, Denice Rowley Hunt of Ansonia, sisters, Elizabeth Matricaria of FL and Angelina Sciarappa of Trumbull, cherished grandchildren, Karen Cafaro Thorpe (Jim), Lisa Cafaro Searles (Richard), Robert Cafaro (Iris), John J.
