Robert Newsom Miles, Sr., age 89, of Oxford, the beloved husband of the late Bertha Bryniak Miles, entered into rest on Friday, April 29, 2011, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Derby on November 8, 1921, beloved son of the late J. Edward and Susannah Williams Miles. Bob was a member of the Oxford United Church of Christ-Congregational and was a retired employee of the Uniroyal Footwear Division of Naugatuck where he had worked for 26 years.
He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, serving with the rank of Sergeant and saw action in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
Bob was a Past Commander and an Active Life Member of Unit 174 David S. Miles American Legion of Oxford, where he had been a charter member of the post that was named in honor of his late brother for 64 years.
He was also Permittee of the Post for many years. Bob was a mentor to all the members.
He was also an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed gardening.
Bob will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
His loving family includes his devoted son Robert N. Miles, Jr. of Oxford and several loving nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife Bertha and his siblings Eleanor W. Miles, Harrison E. Miles, J. Howard Miles, Harriet E. Miles, Donald R. Miles, US Army Sergeant David S. Miles, Rees E. Miles, Marion M. Samoker, Edward U. Miles, Franklin R. Miles, Frances M. Samoker, H. Wilson Miles and Richard H. Miles.
Bob was the last of fourteen children in the Miles family. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Glendale Center of Naugatuck for the excellent care given to him. A special thanks to all who sent cards and flowers to him.
A Memorial Service in Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of the Miller-Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank Street (RT. 67, opposite Klarides Village) Seymour with the Rev. Dr. Bonnie Bardot, Interim Pastor of the Oxford United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Interment with full military honor accorded, will follow in the family plot at Southford Cemetery, Oxford.
Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Thursday morning from 10:00 am until the start of the service at 11:00 am.
