Robert Peter “Bob” Zyskoski passed away peacefully at his home in Shelton on May 9, 2015.
Bob, who was fondly known by many as “Barney” and to his grandchildren as “Poppy” is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Geraldine, and his children Denean H. Pomarico and her husband, Frank, and Robert P. Zyskowski II and his wife, Lori. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Cassandra E. Pomarico, Alexandra E. Zyskowski and Robert P. Zyskowski III, and by his sisters, Genevieve L. Healey and Joan Z. Sheehan. Robert also leaves his much-loved nieces and nephews, extended family and dear friend for over 65 years, Dominic Pirritino. Robert was predeceased by his brother, James B. Zyskoski.
Born on January 28, 1943 to the late Barney and Helen Zyskoski, Bob was honored to have served in United States Air Force, receiving the Connecticut Veterans Wartime Service Medal.
He was a successful entrepreneur, opening his first gas station in Shelton. He went on to own automobile dealerships and later moved his family to St. Thomas V.I. as the owner of a popular restaurant, The Greenhouse.
Bob was also active in local town politics and served as the Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee and its Treasurer and as a member of the Shelton Public Buildings Committee. He also served as a Shelton city sheriff.
Bob was proud to be known as the life of the party and brought his bells to all family occasions. His most treasured times were spent with his grandchildren. He was the proud recipient of the 1995 Polish Man of the Year award by the Derby Elks, which was recognized by the Connecticut General Assembly.
Friends are invited directly to St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Ave, Shelton, for a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, May 13 at 10:30 am. Interment with full military honors will follow at Mt. St. Peter’s Cemetery in Derby. Visiting hours at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton will be Tuesday, May 12 from 4pm – 8pm.
