Salvatore Giardina, 72, of Ansonia, peacefully entered into eternal rest on November 18, 2014, at Griffin Hospital, with his loving family by his side, following a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Michela Mammano Giardina.
Mr. Giardina was born in Caltanissetta, Sicily, Italy on May 11, 1942, son of the late Michele and Giuseppina D’Antoni Giardina. He moved from Italy to Ansonia forty-six years ago and was employed as a mason for Mangione Construction of Oxford until his retirement in 2000. Sal was a communicant of Holy Rosary Church and a member of the Sons of Italy in Derby. He enjoyed his morning walks, playing bocce, making homemade wine, spending winters in Naples, FL and especially his time with his cherished grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Michela, he is survived by two loving daughters, Josephine Griffith (David) of Matthews, NC and Diega Sharkey (Kevin) of Derby, a brother, Carlo Giardina of Milano, Italy, grandchildren, Ryan and Alexander Griffith and Ava and Kevin Sharkey and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Sebastiano Giardina.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday November 21, 2014, from 4 – 7 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Saturday, friends and relatives are invited to attend his funeral at 9:15 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia. Entombment will take place in Mt. St. Peter’s Mausoleum in Derby.
