Salvatore S. Onofrio

Salvatore S. Onofrio, 83, entered into eternal rest on June 12, 2015, at Griffin Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Phyllis Matto Onofrio.

Mr. Onofrio was born in Derby on March 16, 1932, son of the late Francis Onofrio and Dorothy Ceremano Onofrio Scavone. A lifelong resident of Ansonia, he began his career as a printer at the former Charlton Press in Derby and later worked at the New Haven Register where he retired after 30 years as a supervisor.

He was a veteran of the U.S. National Guard, having honorably served during the Korean Conflict. Sal was always a gentleman and enjoyed talking with and helping others. He also enjoyed gardening, splitting wood for his fireplace, cooking and was a former member of the Hilltop Hose Co in Ansonia.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a loving son, Mark J. Onofrio Sr. of Naugatuck, a loving daughter, Karen A. Verrinder (James) of Seymour, a brother, Peter Onofrio of Hamden, sisters, Theresa Ferla of Seymour and Corinne Milek (Alexander) of Oxford, cherished grandchildren, Jeanette Onofrio of FL, Mark Onofrio Jr. (Katie) of Ansonia, Joshua Onofrio of Naugatuck and Matthew and Abby Grace Verrinder of Seymour, former daughter in law, Valerie Onofrio of VT, 4 step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Francis Sonny” and Donald Onofrio.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday June 16, 2015, from 4 – 7 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Wednesday, his funeral will leave the funeral home at 9:30 am for a funeral service at 10:00 am at Living Springs Christian Fellowship Church, 141 Great Hill Road in Seymour. Interment with military honors will take place in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery in Derby.
