Sherril Keithston Redd

Sherril Keithston Redd, 72, of Ansonia, CT, passed away suddenly yet peacefully at home on May 29, 2024. Born on June 26, 1951, to Dorothy (Simmons) and Bishop Eugene A. Redd in New Haven, CT. Sherril was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and uncle whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him.

He was a 1970 graduate of Ansonia High School, a star basketball player, and was voted the best-dressed student. After high school, he attended Housatonic Community College and later became a machinist who dedicated more than 40 years working at Teledyne where he served as a union delegate, Milford Automatics, and R&R Manufacturing. Colleagues and friends admired Sherril’s unwavering dedication, good nature, and work ethic.

Due to his love of reading, Sherril was known by his family for being a walking encyclopedia. He also enjoyed watching westerns, documentaries, and sci-fi movies. He was a sportsman who enjoyed golfing, deep-sea fishing, swimming, bowling, watching sports on TV, and boating when he had the chance. He was also known as a trickster and comedian in his own right and always brought joy and laughter to his friends and family. He enjoyed his Friday night dinners with some of his closest friends, and his weekly golf outings, traveling, taking long walks, and participating in exercise classes at the Ansonia Senior Center.

Over the past few years, he visited those he knew in his youth who had aged and could no longer take care of themselves. It became his ministry to visit to show them they were appreciated, loved, and not forgotten. This act of kindness, which he enjoyed immensely, was his way of giving back to the community. Sherril also enjoyed singing and listening to the Blues. He was often heard belting out lyrics like, Hold on I’m Coming, Soothe Me, When Something is Wrong with My Baby, Buffalo Soldier, I Was Born by the River, and many other songs from the late 60s and 70s. Many have described Sherril as a kind, loving, compassionate, happy, considerate, humble, honest, and gentle soul.

Sherril is survived by his wife of almost 46 years, J. Meany Redd; their twins Randall Sr. (Helen) Redd of Rhode Island and Tracy Redd (Hugh, Jr.) Edwards of Connecticut; siblings Eugene (Janet) Russell of Tennessee, Priscilla (Thomas) Black of Japan, Tarsyia Waddell of Texas, and Ronja (Terri Sr.) Goldson of Connecticut; grandchildren Ni-Jah, Hugh, III, Kijan, Arista, Randall Jr., Heaven, Jair, Zaria, Randolph, and Randell; four great-grandchildren Amir, Kionnie, Donald, and Halo; and a plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family, special friends Dean Ford and Ron Novak, a Godson, James Schuler, and many others who will forever cherish the memories, joy, love, and cheerfulness he shared. Sherril was preceded in death by his parents, with whom he is now reunited in peace, his brother-in-law Tommy, he and Meany’s beloved dogs Dingo and Lucky, and two Godsons Moses Wilds, Jr., and Kevin Johnson.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Star Bethlehem Church, located at 18 Lester Street, Ansonia, CT. Calling hours will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Note: Please wear something colorful; this is a celebration of life!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made, in Sherril’s name, to the Sickle Cell Association of America.
