Stanley L. Zaprzalka, retired Seymour postmaster, entered into rest on June 10, 2014.
He resided in Seymour and was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Olga Albaitis Zaprzalka. He was born in Derby on January 9, 1922, the son of the late Ludwik and Katarzyna (Fryc) Zaprzalka.
Mr. Zaprzalka, “Zap,” retired as Seymour postmaster in 1984 after 25 years of service. He and his wife spent their winters in Florida until her death in 2003. He loved the game of golf, and scored 7 holes-in-one during his career before he stopped playing at age 91. Zap loved to dance and was known for his lively polka dance steps, with his wife and sisters as his favorite dance partners.
Olga and Zap enjoyed traveling and reached their goal of visiting every one of the 50 states, as well as a number of international destinations, including multiple visits to family in Poland.
Zap was a sharp card player, from the pinocle, gin and setback games with his buddies at Highland Golf Club to family holiday marathon matches. He was an avid bridge player and during the summer, he loved flower gardening when he was not playing golf.
He was the president of the Connecticut chapter of the National Association of Postmasters, served on the postmaster selection board and trained newly appointed postmasters. He was past president of the Seymour Lions Club and served as its Zone Chairman. He served as secretary of the Seymour Sewer Authority and was a member of the Seymour Democratic Town Committee.
Zap was always very giving of his time to numerous other organizations, both civic and non-profit, and received a citation from the State of Connecticut General Assembly acknowledging his efforts.
Mr. Zaprzalka was past president Highland Golf Club and was made an honorary member. He was also an honorary member of Knights of Columbus, Aurora Council #53; St Michael’s Church Catholic War Veterans Post 1562; Polish Falcons of America Nest #208. He served as a trustee of the Catholic Family Services and was a founding member of the Kosciuszko Historical Society.
During his school years, he was active in local sports and played baseball, bowling, and basketball. He was a naval veteran of World War II.
Stanley Zaprzalka is survived by his sister Helen Wlodek, and many loving nieces and nephews along with their children. A brother Joseph and two sisters, Jean Zaprzalka and Stella Bondos, predeceased him.
Friends may greet his family on Thursday from 4 to 8 PM in the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home 253 Elizabeth Street Derby. On Friday his funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in St. Michael’s Church Derby. Interment will follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery Derby.
