Susan Helen Shortell Coughlin

It is with great sadness that the family of Susan Helen Shortell Coughlin announce her passing on January 18, 2019. 

Susan was born on January 3, 1948 to the late Matthew F. Pop” Shortell and Bernice Kiley Shortell and the wife of the late John W. Coughlin Jr. She was also predeceased by siblings William J. Shortell and Dorothy Dottie” Shortell. 

Susan was a lifelong Ansonia resident and was a parishioner of The Church of the Assumption in Ansonia. She attended Ansonia High School and graduated from Southern CT State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and earned her Professional Certificate in Administration from Sacred Heart University. 

Susan taught for 37 years for the Seymour Board of Education and was awarded Teacher of the Year for the Seymour Public Schools in 2004. 

Susan was happiest spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children Steven M. Coughlin (Aleisha) and their daughters Lily and Claire, Mary S. Benjamin (Jimmy) and their children Eli and Maya, step-son John T. Coughlin, (Kathleen) and children Jack, Patrick, and Kaitlyn, beloved siblings Matthew F. Shortell III, (Kathleen) Maryanne S. Mangano (Ron), Elizabeth S. Lynch (Thomas), James A. Shortell (Joan), Patrick J. Shortell (Christine), Joseph P. Shortell (Kristin), Steven D. Shortell, Michael D. Shortell (Lorri) and several nieces & nephews. 

Friends may call on Wednesday, January 23 at the Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home, 12 Franklin St. Ansonia from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Jim Sullivan on Thursday, 10:30 a.m. (DIRECTLY) from The Church of the Assumption in Ansonia. She will be buried in the family plot in Mount Saint Peter Cemetery in Derby privately at the convenience of the family.
