Thomas Joseph Gwynne, age 79, of Shelton passed away quietly at the Griffin Hospital Derby on Monday Aug. 8, 2011 with his loving family by his side.
He was the devoted husband of 55 years to Beatrice Demmon Gwynne.
Tom was born in Norwalk on December 17, 1931 son of the late William and Helen Frederich Gwynne and was a resident of Shelton for 53 years.
He was raised in Stratford and was a member of the 1950 graduating class from Stratford High School.
He was also a player on the 1950 State Championship Baseball Team at Stratford High.
He went on to become an expert marksman in the Marine Corp and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was employed for over 30 years with Valley Roofing and Siding until his retirement. He thoroughly enjoyed coaching girls softball and basketball where he earned the nickname “Ace”. He enjoyed playing baseball in the Over 40 league. An occasional poker game with a glass of Dewars brought him much pleasure. He had a warm sense of humor and was a great storyteller.
In his later years, he enjoyed nothing better than watching a Yankee Game with his wife. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and would often reminisce about his love of the Catskill Mountains while smoking his pipe.
He was the beloved father of Marilyn Gwynne, Maureen Monaco, and her husband Tom Miller, Marge Lovermi, and her husband Peter, cherished grandfather of Danielle and Vincent Monaco and Allycia and Peter Lovermi. He was also survived by his brother Alfred Gwynne and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may greet his family on Thursday from 4to 6 PM in the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton. His funeral service with full military honors will follow at 6 PM in the funeral home. His family extends a special thanks to Dr. Mathias and Rita for their compassion, to Officer John Youd for his patience and help, and to the extraordinary care from the Griffin Hospital and Connecticut Hospice who helped with Tom’ passing.
