Vera Sokolowski

Vera Sokolowski, an 88-year-old Derby resident formerly of Ansonia and wife of the late Eugene Sokolowski, entered into eternal rest, at home surrounded by her loving family on September 13.

She was born on August 31, 1925 in Ansonia. She was the daughter of the late Timpko Chirkot and Effie Horbal Chirkot.

She was a graduate of Ansonia High School, Class of 1943 and Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing in N.Y with a diploma from NYU, class of 1946. She worked as a Registered Nurse for Griffin Hospital in Derby as well as serving as assistant director of nurses at Hewitt Health Center in Shelton. Vera retired in 1984 to care for her grandchildren.

She was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Ansonia and was a former member of St. Peter & St. Paul Ukranian Catholic Church in Ansonia.

She is survived by her son, Robert Sokolowski of North Carolina and daughter, Mary Ellen lannucci (Bruce) of Derby, with whom she resided. She also leaves four grandchildren: Melissa (Dustin) Griffin of South Carolina, Mary Allison (Luis) Barrios of Derby, Scott (Caitlin) Iannucci of Ansonia, and Kristen Iannucci of Derby as well as six great grandchildren. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.

Vera loved spending time with her family, the joy of her life. The family would also like to thank her aide Yocasta for her care and compassion, enabling Vera to remain at home during her long illness. She was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Balco and Louise Mica as well as a nephew, Ronald Mica.

Friends may call on Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home, 12 Franklin St. Ansonia. (www.jenkinskingfh.com) A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church in Ansonia. Burial will follow in St. Peter & St. Paul Cemetery in Derby.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Church in Ansonia.
