Walter J. Nizgorski

Walter J. Nizgorski, 93, of Derby, entered into eternal rest on March 24, 2013, at CT Hospice. He was the beloved husband of Tessie Kopec Nizgorski.

Mr. Nizgorski was born in Ansonia on Sept. 17, 1919, son of the late Joseph and Margaret Shultz Nizgorski.

At age 24, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Army, served during WW II and the Korean Conflict, and retired from the U.S. Army in 1979 as a Chief Warrant Officer.

He was a very active and proud member of the Derby Community. He was the organizer, trustee, and former Captain of East End Hose Co # 3 in Derby and served for 26 years on the Board of Apportionment & Taxation in Derby. He served as Derby City Sheriff for 24 years and was a member of C.W.V. Post 1562, American Legion Post 24, V.F.W. Post 10585, AMVETS Post 43 all in Derby, and a member and contributor to several other organizations and affiliations throughout the area.

In addition to his wife Tessie, he is survived by a loving daughter, Frances Ceder (Lawrence) of N. Branford, 3 cherished grandchildren, William Ceder, Deborah DaCunto (Ken) and Kelly Rawson (Brad) of N. Branford, 5 great-grandchildren, Amber and Bradley Rawson and Rachael, Ryan, and Jonathan DaCunto and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Theodore Nizgorski and sisters, Sr. Henrietta Nizgorski, Harriet Koziatek and Helen Koslowski.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday (TODAY) March 26, 2013, from 4 – 7 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia.

On Wednesday, friends and relatives are invited to attend his funeral at 11:15 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 noon at St. Michael’s Church in Derby. Interment with U.S. Army military honors will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Derby.
