William A. Velms, 88, formerly of Ansonia now of the Villages of FL, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 16. He is the husband to the late Joan Cody Velms. Born in Derby, son of the late Stanley and Nellie (Akelaitis) Velms.
A communicant of the Church of the Assumption. Graduate of the Ansonia High School and played basketball on the best team of the 1950s. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, having the duties as a weatherman and teaching while he was attached to the Headquarters Group. Upon returning, he became a teacher for the Oxford School System. Bill became very active in the Democratic Party, running for Alderman, being re-elected ten times and serving as President of that board.
Survivors are his son David (Coleen) Velms of Altamonte Springs, FL, grandsons Brendan and Brian both of Orlando, FL, sister Joyce (Adam) Korpalski of Rocklett, FL, and best friend Gloria Stark.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 31, from 10:45 a.m. till 12:15 in The Bennett Funeral Home, 91 N. Cliff St., Ansonia, then to the Church of the Assumption for a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. Burial with Full Military Honors will be in Mt. St. Peters Cemetery.
