William C. Powanda Jr., a 78-year-old Seymour resident and husband of 47 years to Glynis Powanda, entered into eternal rest Nov. 14, 2018 at Yale New Haven Hospital.
He was born in Derby on May 22, 1940, son of the late William Powanda Sr. and Henrietta Modz Powanda.
He graduated from Ansonia High School in 1957. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after a three year active duty tour. He graduated from Quinnipiac U. in 1968. Bill served as an officer of Seymour’s Citizen Engine Co. Volunteer Fire Dept. He was elected 17th District State Senator in 1973. He was active in launching the Healthy Valley Community Program in 1994. Former President G.H. Bush designated Healthy Valley one of the nation’s “Points of Light” in 1999. Bill began his career in administration at Griffin Hospital in 1975 and served as Vice President until retiring in 2013. He often claimed he was born in his office at Griffin. He was fortunate to have met six U.S. presidents including Ford, Carter, Reagan, G.H. Bush, Clinton and G.W. Bush.
In addition to his wife, Bill leaves behind his sons Matthew (Gloria) and Christopher (Aja) and his grandchildren Zachary, Joshua, Farren & Mavis Powanda.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at The Church of the Assumption in Ansonia on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Military Honors will be rendered at the conclusion of the service. Friends may call at The Church of the Assumption from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home 12 Franklin St. Ansonia, has been entrusted with the arrangements. (www.jenkinskingfh.com) Burial will be private.
