William J. Menna—Former Ansonia Mayor

William J. Menna, 92, entered into eternal rest on October 1, 2015, at Shelton Lakes/Apple Rehab in Shelton. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary DellaVolpe Menna.

Bill was born in Derby on July 3, 1923, son of the late Palmerino and Giovanna Beritt Menna. He graduated from Derby High School in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he honorably served during WW II.

Following his discharge, he worked at the Farrel Corp. in Ansonia for 43 years. He was elected Mayor of Ansonia from 1983 until 1987 and was then elected as a Member of the State of CT Legislature, 104th District Rep. for two years serving on the Labor and Education Committees. Bill was a member of Hilltop Hose Co. #5 in Ansonia where he served as Treasurer for 20 years and an active member of numerous clubs, societies and organizations including American Legion Post 50, St. Sebastian Club, UNICO, 2nd Company Governor’s Foot Guard in New Haven for 35 years, Holy Rosary Church C.M.C., Derby Historical Society, Past Chairman and 25 year member of the Ansonia Republican Town Committee, Sons of Italy Valley Lodge in Derby, Board of Directors for the Salvation Army, Birmingham Group Health Services and Boy Scouts of America, and corporator and volunteer and Griffin Hospital. 

He is survived by several nieces and nephews especially James T. DellaVolpe of Ansonia. He was predeceased by a brother, Sabatino Menna and sisters, Lillian O’Connor, Josephine Menna and Emelinda Hogan. 

Family and friends are invited to attend Bill’s funeral on Friday October 9, 2015, at 10:00 am at Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with U.S. Navy military honors will follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery in Derby. Visiting will take place on FRIDAY MORNING in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia from 8:30 am until the procession leaves for church. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the Boys and Girls Club, 28 Howard Avenue, Ansonia, CT 06401.
