William L. Poeta Sr., 88, of Ansonia, entered into eternal rest on August 26, 2014, at Yale New Haven Hospital, with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan Golino Poeta, who passed away on June 15, 2014.
Mr. Poeta was born in Derby on December 31, 1925, son of the late Luigi and Mary Paradisi Poeta. A lifelong resident of Ansonia, he was employed as a carpenter for Francini Construction and later retired from American Brass. Following his retirement, Bill worked part-time at Big Y Supermarket where he made countless new friends and saw numerous existing friends.
A proud veteran, Bill honorably served during World War II in the U.S. Air Force. He was a communicant of Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia and a member of its Catholic Men’s Club. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Holy Rosary Council #10537, Valley Heart Club and enjoyed golf, playing cards, and visiting the casino.
He is survived by a loving son, William L. Poeta Jr. (Donna) of Old Lyme, two loving daughters, Lisa Poeta-Bowe and Christine Ciepiela (Michael) of Ansonia, two brothers, Albert Poeta (Fran) of Seymour and Louis Poeta (Mary) of Beacon Falls, a sister, Norma Biondi (Evo) of Seymour, 7 cherished grandchildren, Devon Poeta, Ryan Poeta (Kimberly), Stacy Hultman, Kori Ocascio (Adam), Shannon Lionetti, Jessica Sanchez (Wardys) and Courtney Ciepiela, 15 great-grandchildren, Landon, Leighton, Ava, Madison, Austin, Zachery, Mayah, Adam Jr., Gianna, Owen, Olivia, Jacob, Jaysa, Gabriel, Julius, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson, Shane Poeta and brothers, John, Joseph and Victor Poeta.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday August 29, 2014, from 4 – 7 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Saturday, friends and relatives are invited to attend his funeral at 9:15 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia. Entombment with U.S. Air Force military honors will take place in Mt. St. Peter Garden Mausoleum in Derby.
