Ansonia Approves Budget, Schools Prep Pink Slips

But schools Superintendent Carol Merlone said the $58.6 million budget — finalized by the Board of Apportionment and Taxation Monday — will mean layoffs and program cuts in the school district.

“It’s devastating,” Merlone said after the vote.

Derby Budget Cheat Sheet

The Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation will host a public hearing on the proposed 2012-2013 budget at 6 p.m. Monday, May 21 on the second floor of Derby City Hall at 1 Elizabeth St.

The new mill rate in the proposed budget is 36.6 — a year-to-year increase of 8.7 mills.

New Principal Named At Derby’s Irving School

The Derby Board of Education has appointed Ms. Jennifer Olson of Cheshire, Connecticut as the next Principal of the Irving Elementary School.

The Board acted in response to a recommendation from Superintendent Stephen Tracy, who praised Olson as a resourceful, child-focused leader.

Derby Schools Ask For Less Money, Tax Board Adopts Preliminary Budget

The Derby tax board Thursday adopted a $37.2 million preliminary budget after more than 90 minutes of deliberation.

The budget carries a spending increase of about $1.6 million.

The vote was unanimous, although three tax board members cautioned the numbers discussed Thursday could change.

“It’s not in anyone’s interest to hold up the process. This is a preliminary budget,” tax board member Judy Szewczyk said.

Derby Elementary Schools To Benefit From Valley United Way Effort

Valley United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) has selected Derby Elementary Schools to benefit from the 2012 CVC Back to School Clothes for Kids Project.

Last year 150 students from Longhill and Sunnyside Schools in Shelton a received individualized boxes of new clothing and supplies to begin the school year.

To date the CVC has outfitted 2,207 Valley children and spent $455,000.

Derby Resident, 81, To Receive College Degree

SCSU PhotoGenevieve Healey, an 81-year-od Derby resident, will receive her Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal studies from Southern Connecticut State University on May 18, after 13 years of taking classes part time at the university.

Even with six children, 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Healey found time to study literature, art appreciation and Italian. It may have taken her 13 years of part-time classes, but she said it was time well spent.

Healey took her first college course — an art class at Southern — in 1970. But it wasn’t until a few years after the death of her husband in 1996 that she decided to take classes regularly.

Ansonia Supt. Calls Budget ‘A Travesty To Education’

The Ansonia Board of Apportionment and Taxation approved a tentative 2012-2013 budget Monday, after a handful of people spoke during a public hearing at City Hall.

The budget numbers become final after the tax board votes on May 21, but Monday’s vote showed the tax board is leaning toward $58.6 million budget that would result in a 5.3 percent tax increase for residents.

The vote was 10 to 1.
