Two people inside a Derby home escaped unharmed before flames gutted the house Thursday evening.
A firefighter sustained a minor cut while battling the blaze but no other injuries were reported.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.
The fire at 62 Oak St. in west Derby was reported about 5 p.m.
“When they first got on scene here they had heavy fire coming out of the first floor,” Assistant Chief Robert Laskowsi said.
About 60 firefighters from Derby and Shelton responded, as did Ansonia Rescue and Medical Services.
The firefighters were able to knock down the fire quickly despite limited access to the house, Laskowski said.
Oak Street is a narrow, dead-end road off of 5th and Lafayette streets.
Fire trucks parked behind the AM Club on Hawthorne Avenue were able to put out most of the flames, Laskowski said.
The damage to the home was extensive.
“It’s uninhabitable,” Laskowski said.
Laskowski said the Red Cross had been called to offer temporary housing to the people who lived at the home.
Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks was called to the scene to investigate the cause and origin of the blaze.
