Ansonia Seeks New Housing Authority Director

PHOTO: Jodie MozdzerThe Ansonia Housing Authority has started its search for a new executive director — and has received dozens of applications for the job.

That’s according to Jimmy Miller, the interim executive director at the Ansonia Housing Authority.

Miller updated the Board of Commissioners on the search at the board’s regular meeting Wednesday (Feb. 15).

Hopefully before my term ends we will have a permanent ED,” Miller said during the meeting.

The job has been posted in various places — including affordable housing websites such as this one.

The job description calls for someone with a bachelors degree with a concentration in public administration, urban planning, law, or business administration.

It also seeks five years of supervisory experience in an organization with a budget of $2.5 million or more.

If the applicant doesn’t have those qualifications, the description says 10 years of experience with at least three as a supervisor would be acceptable.

The listed salary is $105,000.

The position has been vacant since Dec. 28, when former Executive Director James Finnucan resigned.

An investigation by the Valley Independent Sentinel showed that Finnucan was renting an apartment under the Section 8 program the Ansonia Housing Authority administered — in direct violation of HUD regulations.

Finnucan resigned in December, and under an agreement will receive his $104,978 salary until the end of February.

Miller would not say how many candidates have applied — but said it is in the dozens.

There are a lot of people that are interested in Ansonia, and that’s a very good thing,” Miller said after the meeting Wednesday.

There’s no lack of interest in the job,” Miller said.

Board of Commissioners Chairman James Tyma said the board will likely form a committee by the end of the week to start reviewing the applications.

Miller, 60, is the current deputy executive director for New Haven’s housing authority. He is splitting his time between both authorities for three months.

Miller said he was not interested in applying for the Ansonia position full time.
