After four previous unsuccessful attempts, Marcus “Buff” Bartone won the annual paczki-eating contest at Eddy’s Bake Shop on Main Street Tuesday.
He downed eight of the monstrous pastries in five minutes.
It was an especially sweet win for Bartone, who uses the annual event to spread awareness about Neuroblastoma, a rare cancer his daughter, Sydney, died of seven years ago.
She was just 7 years old.
Bartone brought along five people to participate in the contest, and two supporters, all of whom wore blue shirts as part of “Team Sydney.”
Bartone received a $150 prize for his accomplishment.
Michael Peterson of Seymour took home second place, winning $50.
Tuesday was the first time in years “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti of Wallingford didn’t walk away with the first-place prize. Menchetti wasn’t in attendance at Tuesday’s gathering.
Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti served as time keeper for the event.
